The Gloucester City boss is the new Head Coach at Edgar Street - announced less than an hour before kick-off against Chester.
He saw the size of the task ahead of him as the Bulls went down 3-0 in the north west. They have now lost five of their last six National League North matches.
Richards will be reunited with Head of Football Tim Harris after the pair worked together at the Tigers before a change was made last year.
The Hereford board parted company with three-time title winner Peter Beadle last month as they felt a change in structure was required.
The ultimate goal is the take the club to the EFL and Richards says he is up to the challenge.
“I feel extremely honoured and proud to be given the opportunity to join Hereford FC,” he told the club’s website.
“I cannot wait to get started and am very excited about the potential the club has and the possibilities I believe we can achieve.
“While I am sad to be leaving Gloucester City and would like to thank everyone there for all the support they have given me, quite simply I feel this is an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down.”
Harris said: “Marc is a highly respected coach and an intelligent, progressive, forward-thinking young man. I believe he will prove to be an excellent fit for this football club and for all we are looking to achieve.”
