Richards Commits to Torquay

Torquay United midfielder Courtney Richards has put pen-to-paper on a new contract and will be staying with the Vanarama National League club.

Richards, 22, has impressed United fans with his all-action displays and will to win since leaving Brighton & Hove Albion and joining the Gulls in July 2014.

The midfielder has made seventy-four League appearances for the club, scoring 6 goals.

“I’m delighted to have Courtney back on board” said player-manager Kevin Nicholson. “He is a leader and our vice-captain, and the kind of player who you want alongside you in a battle.”

“Courtney played a big part in our successes last season and his contribution is often overlooked because he does the ugly side of the game so well. We value him very highly and he will come back hungry to kick on again.

“I often forget how young he is, as he is a very mature and a deep thinker. He has a very bright future ahead of him if we can provide the environment for him to thrive in.”

“There are a lot of reasons why I chose to re-sign for the club” said Richards. “I made my decision based on the whole package. The people down here are good and the staff are solid.

“Over the summer I spoke to strength and conditioning coach Simon Jeffery about his plans. I also had lengthy discussions with the manager about what his plans are and what he wanted to achieve. The ambition side of it is what drew me back.

“Given the quality of players that we have signed, it is looking very positive.

“We’re a squad that is doing things differently to what other clubs are doing. We’re doing a different pre-season, and a different way of building into the season. I think it is going to put us a step ahead of our rivals”.
