The U’s came out on top in the battle of the title hopefuls at Crabble despite playing the final half an hour with ten men following Harry Beautyman’s red card.
But Sutton defended doggedly to leave Kent with all three points and now know that a victory in their game in hand would take them just a point behind leaders Macclesfield Town.
Doswell told SUFCtv: “I couldn’t be prouder of the players because it was a backs to the wall performance for the last half an hour after Harry was sent off.
“The whole back five were superb and we had a masterful centre forward’s performance from Tommy Wright.
“It was a joy to watch for the first hour. We really had to dig in for the last half an hour and it showed a different side of the team.
“You’ve got to give the boys lots of credit for having the steel needed to see the game out. It’s a massive away win for us.”
