Rebel With A Cause George Honoured With An MBE

Worthing’s fearless owner George Dowell was recognised in the New Year Honours list - and says he thought it was a scam!

The Rebels head honcho used the compensation from his near fatal car crash almost a decade ago to save the club - and set about transforming the ground and the team’s fortunes.

George’s life was changed beyond recognition when the accident left him consigned to a wheelchair for the rest of his life aged just 17.

But he turned a heartbreaking negative into a positive for the entire community, wiping out all Worthing’s debts and paying for a new 3G pitch.

Now the club are competing to play in the National League and in an interview with The Argus, he says through the letter he received was something very different.

He will have the letters MBE at the end of his name going forward, honoured for his services to association football and to disability awareness by the King.

“I thought it was a scam!” he told publication. “I was completely shocked by it to be honest, I honestly don’t know how I got it.

“I did ask, ‘how did this come about?’ I guess someone has put my name forward - although I never set out to buy the club to inspire people, we get messages from other people in my situation saying they see my story and it gives them hope.”
