Port Bring in Ashton

By Steve Whitney

Vanarama National League club Southport have announced the signing of Neil Ashton on a one-year contract.

The Liverpool-born full-back joins Port from fellow National League side Barrow AFC where he made seven appearances at Holker Street last season.

Thirty-one-year-old Ashton has had previous spells at Tranmere Rovers, Shrewsbury and Macclesfield Town but most notably made 204 appearances for Wrexham between 2010 and 2015, including being part of the 2013 FA Trophy-winning side, playing in every round but unfortunately missing the final through injury.

Manager Andy Bishop is pleased to add the experienced defender to the squad and has named him vice-captain to work alongside captain Gary Jones.

Bishop said: "I'm delighted to get Neil. We've been working on a deal since last season. He was always going to be my first choice left-back. For me he's one of the best in the league and he'll come in as vice-captain under Gary Jones".
