Despite summer positivity, Pools have made a slow start to the new season.
But their winless first four games came to an end on Saturday when they beat Maidenhead United 2-1.
Now Bates wants that to signal the moment they start to climb the National League.
“I have told the players that that’s us now,” he said. “That’s the game we use to take us to where we want to go.
“What we have got to do from here is go on and make a statement.
“We haven’t been playing badly. If fact we should have a lot more points on the board that we do,” he adds.
“But every team needs that first three points. We scored some great goals and we really deserved that win.
“Now we have Dagenham and Chesterfield over the Bank Holiday weekend and we have something to take us forward into that.”
