Parkin Pounces For Landmark 200th Career Goal

By David Richardson

John Parkin's brace against Salford City on Saturday in the FA Cup not only took York City into the next round but he also surpassed 200 career goals.

Trailing 1-0 at half-time, the 35-year-old netted his 200th and then the match winning 201st goal of his career.

Parkin has played in the Championship down to League Two, turning out for Hull City, Preston North End, Cardiff City and Fleetwood Town to name a few.

Speaking after Saturday's game, the vastly experienced striker said: "It's not been playing on my mind but I wanted to get it out of the way.

"My mum and dad, my brother, and my little boy were there which was nice. I wanted them to be there when I did it - so, obviously, I am over the moon.

"I will probably sit and think about it all later but as long as we are getting results, I am not too fussed if I score. I have had my main career so it's all about results really."

Recounting his two goals, he said: "It was a great ball in by Louis (Almond). If I had missed that I think I would have probably retired!"

"The second, I scooped in with my left foot. The goalkeeper was a bit unlucky because he had gone the other way and I managed to divert it to the other side and he just couldn't quite get there."

Manager Gary Mills added: “We all clapped Jon for getting his 200th goal because he’s had a tough time trying to put the ball in the net.

“No matter how old you are or what kind of career you’ve had, he’s a human being and he’s missed chances to get us another two or three points on the board.

“That’s no me blaming him because, as I always say, scoring goals is the hardest part of the game, but I think he needed that next one to give him a lift and if the ball hadn’t have gone in I would have taken Jon off to bring Kaine [Felix] on. That just shows you how quickly things change in football.”
