Oxford Overcome Cup Disappointment To Earn Crucial Points

By Steve Whitney

Truro City missed the opportunity to move into second place in the Vanarama National League South after losing 3-1 at Marsh Lane on Tuesday night against a now seventeenth-placed Oxford City side.

After a cagey opening, it was the home side who edged in front on 18 minutes when Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain drove the ball into the danger zone and as Tom McHale parried, Matt Paterson was well-placed to fire home from close range.

The visitors struggled to get a foot-hold in the game during the opening period and the home defence were solid, limiting Truro to half-chances, although genuinely opportunities were also at a premium for the hosts, who were recovering from their brave Emirates FA Cup exit to Notts County last weekend.

It was the home side who began the second period on top and White Tigers` keeper Tom McHale was forced to save well from Reece Fleet with 52 minutes gone on the clock.

City extended their advantage just past the hour-mark when Godfrey Poku threaded an intelligent ball through to Paterson who was able to lift over the advancing McHale to make it 2-0.

However, within a minute Truro reduced the arrears when Aaron Lamont turned the ball home with a low strike into the bottom corner.

But the home side sealed the victory in stoppage time when a breakaway ended with Zac McEachran teeing up Paterson for a simple chance as he completed his hat-trick.
