Owers Wants Torquay Out Of The Bottom Four For Christmas

Gary Owers wants to make sure Torquay United are out of the National League relegation zone for Christmas to give supporters the perfect gift.

Owers, who left Bath City to take charge of Torquay in September, has given the Gulls fresh hope after a miserable start to the season.

The Plainmoor outfit finished just three points above the bottom four last term and Owers is hoping his side can pull clear of danger over the festive period.

The Gulls have kept clean sheets in their last three fixtures and won two of them, including a shock victory at leaders Sutton United three weeks ago.

Owers’ side face a tough trip to Tranmere on Saturday before the boss’ hometown team Gateshead visit Devon next Tuesday.

“We’ve got a long way to go, we’re still stuck in that bottom four,” Owers told the Non-League Football Show.

“There’s no magic wand, it’s just about working hard. When Martin (Kuhl, assistant) and I arrived on day one, there were 27 players registered which is far too many.

“It’s been a tough job finding out what the best way to go forward is. We’ve gone from 4-3-3 to two up front, three centre-halves and a sort of 3-5-2 system. That’s worked for us.

“We’ve had some good performances where we haven’t quite got what we deserved in terms of points but they’ve started coming now.

“We’re starting to turn the corner and we’d like to escape that bottom four over Christmas and the New Year and find ourselves in a position of safety.

“Then we can have a look at things in the summer and get this club going forward in the right direction and restore it to its former glories.”
