Owers: "Torquay Have Been A League Club & Can Be Again"

Owers left Bath City on Wednesday and swapped a tilt at promotion in the Vanarama National League South for a battle against the drop a level higher.

Keeping the winless Gulls in the National League is now his concern and after taking over his first assignment is a big one - and a long one!

Owers takes Torquay to Barrow this weekend and he and
assistant Martin Kuhl know there’s a long road ahead in more ways than one.

That trip to Cumbria comes on the back of Tuesday night's game in Kent, where United lost 3-1 to Bromley as they remain rooted to the bottom of the table as Brett Williams came back to haunt his former club.

“Three things attracted me to Torquay United; The size of the club, the challenge ahead of me and the potential,” said the new boss after he was announced to the press this afternoon.

“This has been a League club and it can be again. Myself and Martin, we want to be the people that start the resurgence. We want to get it heading in the right direction but it’s not going to happen overnight.

“The short term aim to lift the spirit of the players and bring some confidence back. We need to get the supporters back onside.

“The players have forgotten what it feels like to win, and the emotion that brings. We have to ensure we don’t go many more games without experiencing that.

“There is no pressure on the players. They have been told they just need to give a little bit more and hopefully after we make the trip to Barrow on Saturday we will have some smiles back on faces.”
