But in a season that has had plenty of shocks and surprises, the Gulls first success of the season in East London would hardly be out of place.
Torquay’s new manager Gary Owers hopes that’s the case. He has called for a repeat of what he say in their last away game at Barrow.
Denied in injury time, he says the bottom side will “give it a really good go” at Dagenham, a team Owers rates highly.
He wants his players to put the home defeat to Macclesfield last weekend out of their mind and believes that first victory can be a catalyst to kick starting their season.
“We’re in a big relegation battle and we need to start picking up wins,” said Owers, who left Bath City’s promotion bid to try and keep the club in the Vanarama National League.
“We’ll go to Dagenham looking to get that first win - it needs to come sooner rather than later, and if we can pick up three points it will hopefully be the start of the kind of run we need.”
He added: “But I know from experience John Still sides are always very difficult to get something out of. They work hard and he is a top manager.
“But there is always a chance. They will be organised but we need to be as well.”
