Only Three Games Survive In National League North On Bank Holiday Monday

By Steve Whitney

Only three games managed to beat the weather in the Vanarama National League North on Bank Holiday Monday, with leaders Salford City`s clash at Southport being one of the casualties.

However, second-placed had no problems on their artificial surface at the CNG Stadium and moved to within three points of the Ammies after a 5-1 win over eighth-placed Blyth Spartans.

Harrogate raced into a two-goal lead through John McCombe after 10 minutes and Jake Wright on 36 minutes - both from Joe Leesley corners - but they were pegged back by Sean Reid's far post finish on 36 minutes.

But Dominic Knowles bundled Ben Parker's effort over the line to make it 3-1 a minute before the interval.

George Thomsonmade it 4-1 just 8 minutes into the second half, before Wright made it a nap hand with a superb curling effort after 69 minutes.

Buildbase FA Trophy finalists Brackley Town`s title hopes took another blow following last Friday`s goalless draw with Harrogate, losing 2-1 at Aggborough to a now fourth-placed Kidderminster Harriers.

The goals came late though and Brackley struck first in the 81st minute through skipper Gareth Dean.

But two goals in 5 minutes, the first from defender Fraser Horsfall in the 83rd minute, the second from Dan Bradley 2 minutes from time, sealed Harriers vital victory.

The only other game to take place saw Chorley run out 2-0 winners at home to Bradford Park Avenue and move to within two points of the top seven and leave the visitors to go back over the Pennines with their play-off hopes all-but having disappeared after two holiday defeats.

Marcus Carver got the opener a minute before half-time after a cross from Alex Newby.

Jason Walker headed in the second in the 51st minute for Matt Jansen’s men.
