On this Day: Action From The Archives (March 6th)

By Steven Coney

This year’s National League promotion race has been one you have to keep your eyes on - and looking back, the 2011/12 campaign was similar.

Fleetwood Town ended up winning the title but they were pushed all the way by Wrexham and then York City went up through the play-offs, a week after winning the FA Trophy.

It’s always nice to take a stroll down memory lane so we’ve gone back to a Tuesday night in 2012 and looked at what happened On This Day six years ago…

Fleetwood extended their unbeaten league run to an impressive 21 games thanks to a stunning effort from, you guessed it, Jamie Vardy. The striker’s goal gave the Cod Army a 2-1 win over Grimsby Town.

Alfreton Town picked up the result of the day, blowing Stockport County away in a 6-1 rout. Nathan Jarman’s hat-trick fired the Reds to an emphatic win.

There were also seven goals shared at Newport County as they were beaten 4-3 by visiting Braintree Town. Britt Assombalonga, then on loan at Braintree, led the way with the two goals to push the Iron up to mid-table.

In the North division, Harrogate Town hit six goals as they saw off Corby Town 6-2. Striker Chib Chilaka claimed a hat-trick as the Steelmen were put to the sword.

There were also six goals shared at Eastwood Town as the home side were beaten 4-2 by Vauxhall Motors. Eventual champions Hyde played the previous evening, beating Workington 4-0.

Meanwhile, in the South, Welling United boosted their play-off hopes as Jack Parkinson’s 30-yarder helped beat Weston-super-Mare 2-0.

Substitute James Walker netted the winner as Dover Athletic overcame Chelmsford City 2-1. Champions at the end of the season, Woking, were not in action.
