On This Day: Action From The Archives (December 29th)

By Steven Coney

As it’s the time of year for reflection, we’ve decided to take a look back at seasons gone by in the National League.

Whilst December 29 may not be a permanent fixture in the festive calendar, our clubs did at least try and get a game of football on this day back in 2012-13.

Only a handful of top-flight matches survived the weather but the North and South also added a further eight games, so let’s take a look at what happened.

Surprise package Hyde were the only winners in the Premier division as they won 1-0 at struggling Southport thanks to Adam Griffin's first-half curler.

Wrexham missed the chance to go second, drawing 2-2 at home with Tamworth. Skipper Dean Keates was dismissed for the Dragons and Tamworth netted a late equaliser through Scott Barrow.

At the bottom end of the table, AFC Telford’s 2-2 draw at Stockport County meant the Hatters remained in the bottom four. The game passed three pitch inspections and the crowd were rewarded with late drama as Craig Hobson’s 93rd minute goal snatched a point for County.

Mid-table sides Lincoln City and Gateshead shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw and it was the same scoreline at Dartford as they held Cambridge United.

In the North, it was three wins out of three for the home sides as Boston United, runaway leaders Chester and Stalybridge Celtic all chalked up victories.

Boston saw off Oxford City 3-1, Chester overcame Hinckley United 3-0 whilst Stalybridge beat Bradford Park Avenue 2-0.

Maidenhead United were the big winners in the South as they thrashed Staines Town 6-0. There were also victories for AFC Hornchurch against Billericay Town (1-0), Chelmsford City against Boreham Wood (2-1) and Bromley at Tonbridge Angels (3-0).

There was also a lone FA Cup second round replay as Macclesfield Town comfortably beat Barrow 4-1 to set up a third round game against Championship leaders Cardiff City.
