On This Day: Action From The Archives (April 27th)

By Steven Coney

We’ve got plenty to look forward to in the National League this weekend but we’ve decided to take a break and look back at some other final days.

The final day of the 2012-13 campaign was this day five years ago and despite the Conference Premier finishing a week prior, the North and South divisions plenty of drama.

We’ve opened the archives to see what happened on that final day as a title was secured and relegation spots were decided by a mere goal.

Welling United were celebrating in the Conference South as they lifted the title after their 1-1 draw against Eastleigh.

The Wings were already confirmed as champions but started their promotion party following their final game.

Salisbury City warmed up for the play-offs in the perfect fashion by beating Basingstoke Town 4-0.

Rob Sinclair, Charles Ademeno, James White and Elliot Frear all netted for Salisbury, who went on to finish second and win promotion through the play-offs.

The beaten finalists, Dover Athletic, also ended their regular season campaign with a 4-0 away victory at Kent rivals Bromley.

Harry Ottoway, Moses Ademola, Daryl McMahon and Billy Bricknell were on target as Bromley were put to the sword.

Elsewhere, relegated clubs AFC Hornchurch and Billericay Town signed off with home wins against Hayes & Yeading and Maidenhead Town respectively.

Whilst the relegation picture was already clear before the Conference South’s final day, it went down to the wire in the North.

Corby Town were held to a goalless home draw with Gainsborough Trinity meaning they were relegated by one goal.

Histon also managed a 0-0, on the road at Bradford Park Avenue, meaning the Stutes stayed up by the finest margin.

The title had been sewn up weeks before by formidable Chester and they ended their season with a 1-0 win at Worcester City - the home side’s final ever game at St George’s Lane.

Despite ending the campaign with a 1-0 defeat at Stalybridge Celtic, FC Halifax Town were the team promoted through the play-offs after they finished fifth.

Guiseley, who finished second on 91 points, fell to a shock defeat at home to rock-bottom Hinckley United whilst fellow play-off rivals Altrincham thrashed relegated Droylsden 6-0.
