The defender has penned a deal at his former club’s National League rivals Bromley after leaving Essex to switch to Kent.
Okoye announced on Twitter that he wouldn’t be staying at Braintree for the coming campaign after helping the club to promotion last season, but admitted it wasn’t an easy decision.
He wrote: “As painful as it is for me to say, I won’t be staying at Braintree Town.
“My first thank you have to be directed towards Bradley Quinton and his staff, a top manager and a top person. He allowed me to develop my game and mature.
“Thank you to all the fans who supported us through every win loss or draw. You kicked every ball with us,” he added.
“I can’t put into words my gratitude for every single person associated with Braintree Town.
Bromley are a club Okoye knows well after coming through their youth ranks and the 25-year-old told the club’s official website of his eagerness to get going for his new side.
“Being around the club for quite a part of my life it’s been amazing to see the transformation of the club coming back now,” he said.
“Everything has really developed and I think that’s a good sign of where this club is trying to head to.
“I can’t wait to begin pre-season, meet the boys and start full-time training,” he added.
Okoye becomes the 13th player to commit to the Ravens for the coming season, and manager Neil Smith told the club’s official website of his delight at getting this one over the line.
He said: “He’s a Bromley boy having come through the youth section, so I see it as us bringing someone back home.
“He’s since been away from the club and has played for likes for Braintree where last season he enjoyed real success with them.
“I see him as a great acquisition and it’s another leader coming into this squad.”
