Off The Top, But Sutton Boss Hails His Players

Sutton United's manager Paul Doswell isn't cut up about the club being deposed as Vanarama National League leaders.

United lost 3-1 at home to Maidstone United on Saturday afternoon.

It was a case of 'what if' for the London team after holding a 1-0 advantage going in for their half time cup of tea.

The result, combined with Dagenham and Redbridge's 5-1 success at home to Bromley, means Sutton United are no longer top of the league table.

But Doswell knows Saturday was far from a disaster and won't dwell on a bad day at the office.

The manager said: "The players have been absolutely brilliant so far this season.

"It's a shame we didn't put the game to bed when we had the chance as I felt if we took our opportunities, we would have been strong enough to hold a 2-0 lead but it wasn't to be.

"But credit to Maidstone as at 1-0 down they played very well in the second half an turned things around.

"It's a long season. We have had a lot of injury problems and we have not been able to change things around as much as others maybe have.

"I can't criticise the players. They have given me everything so far and I suppose we just ran out of steam.

He added: "We will plough on. We now have Bromley on Monday and we want to dust ourselves down and get a result."
