The Tudors were in the lower reaches of the Vanarama National League South this time last season.
Their slow start eventually put paid to any chance the team had of mounting a serious promotion campaign.
Brennan says that although they have only collected one point from three games and exited the FA Cup, he knows the club have come on.
"This time last year we were really struggling for form, results and goals," said the manager ahead of the weekend trip to Eastbourne Borough.
"It was difficult but we came on strong and moved ourselves up the table once things settled down.
"We are in a better place this year so we should remember that.
"The season is still young and although we would maybe like more points on the board everyone can see that no side is running away with it yet. It's a league where clubs will take points off each other most weeks and that makes it exciting."
Their cause hasn't been helped by injury and on Saturday they face a side that rolled them over twice last season.
"It wasn't two fixtures I look back and remember well!" said the Vauxhall Road manger.
"They beat us 3-0 at home and 4-0 away so we need to get the record straight and try and get a much better result."
