The Gulls start their campaign against one of the favourites for the league title in Tranmere Rovers, writes Tom Feaheny.
Speaking to the club's website Nicholson admitted he has plenty of options to decide from going into the opening encounter.
“It’s going to be a very difficult job to pick a team hard to pick a formation based on how well everyone’s done all over the place, so a good problem to have.
"I’m proud of the work that the players have put in over pre-season but that’s gone now. From now on, all I’m bothered about is Tranmere and how we’re going to try and give them a game.”
He added: “I’ve learned that we can play several different formations effectively. I’ve learned that the players are retentive, wanting to learn and they’re going to raise my game, because I need to give them the best of me."
“I’ve learned that they’re a very very good group and their chemistry has come along really well early on but we’ve now got to go and do that in the season. There is going to highs and lows and we’ve got to make sure that we stay consistent throughout.
Torquay's last results was a 6-0 win against Truro City on Friday night, with Nicholson pleased with the performance his side showed, as they move towards August 5th.
“There was some very very good football and some very very good goals. Nice for the fans that turned up to watch it.
"We’ve now got to take that into our preparation for next week and I’ve got to somehow pick a team of 16-18 lads that all deserve to play.”
