New Wrexham Loanee Makes Instant Impact

By Steve Whitney

Dean Keates moved to secure the services of a striker ahead of last night`s game against Gateshead and was successful in binging on board a forward who he played alongside at Rushall Olympic.

Coming in on loan is 21-year-old Alex Reid, who was signed by SkyBet League One side Fleetwood Town in January of this year from the Walsall-based Evo-Stik League Premier outfit.

With the likes of Sheffield Wednesday circling, it was the Flyde coast club that got their man, although Keates was also interested in signing him at the time.

“Obviously I knew him from my period with Rushall and could see his potential,” said Keates.“I did try to make him my first signing in January, but the EFL sides were very aware of him and they had the cheque books to match.

“I'm pleased that Fleetwood have allowed him to come on loan to us now. He certainly knows how to score goals, is hungry to succeed and make a success of his step up to full-time football.

“He offers us something different and can play off the shoulder, which will make him a handful for defenders.”

Signed on a short-term deal for two months, the highly-rated striker joined the Cod Army after scoring 40 goals in the previous eighteen months.

A product of Aston Villa’s youth academy which he joined at the age of ten, Reid impressed during a trial at Fleetwood, catching the eye with an all-action display in attack.

Reid also spent time at Walsall and Solihull Moors before moving to the Pics in February 2015.

And he certainly endeared himself to the Wrexham faithful, coming off the bench to net the 71st minute winner in the 1-0 win against Gateshead at the Racecourse Ground last night.
