New Gulls Boss Demands Instant Improvement

Honest Gary Owers said Torquay United were nowhere near at the level they need to be after the new manager watched his side be defeated in his first home match in charge.

Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Macclesfield drew a critical response from the Gulls boss.

He was pleased with last week's performance at Barrow in the 1-1 draw but couldn't find the positives as they still chase that first win of the season.

He told Torquay United's official website that if the club want to pull away from trouble then things must change.

"The first half I thought we were way off the pace,” Owers commented. “If the players think that’s good enough to win a game at home, they’re mistaken.

"I haven’t come here to sit and watch that. It was very, very average.

"Second half was slightly better because we forced their goalkeeper into a couple of saves and we created a couple of chances.

“The onus is on us," he added. "We’re not in this position for nothing. You can’t just sit and watch games drift by and certainly for 45 minutes we did today.”

Torquay face a trip to title chasing Dagenham & Redbridge next followed by a home game against Maidenhead United.
