National League South: Complete Weekend Preview

By Sam Elliott

The climax to an incredible National League South season isn’t far away and this weekend could prove to be pivotal.

Just three points separate leaders Truro City and fifth place Torquay United with time ticking - it’s the tightest title race anywhere!

So what will Saturday tell us? Well, quite a lot.

John Askey believes Truro’s destiny is very much in their own hands and their quest to keep their noses in front sees the leaders visit Hornchurch.

But the Tinners must beware. Daryl McMahon’s club have beaten challengers Worthing, Torquay United and Boreham Wood at home this season.

Worthing won’t be going anywhere in this titanic tussle. Behind on goal difference only, the Rebels’ challenge continues with a vital home game against Chippenham Town.

Dorking Wanderers blip is over after a return of seven points from their last three matches. With four to go, a tricky trip to Bath City awaits next - and they’ve just thumped Hampton & RB 5-0.

Don’t ignore Eastbourne Borough - especially with George Alexander, the division’s top scorer with 23 goals. Tucked away nicely in third, they go to St Albans City, who were more than a match for Dorking at Clarence Park a week ago.

Torquay know there can’t be another slip up if they’re to stay in contention to be champions. Only three points will do at home to Slough Town after Chesham United left Plainmoor victorious last time.

Boreham Wood are six points off the pace but you never know what can happen late on in a season - they’ve got neighbours Hemel Hempstead Town in their sights on Saturday.

Even Maidstone United in seventh can still win it - they have a home game with already-relegated Weymouth.

The battle to make the play-offs isn’t such a bun-fight.

Only Weston-super-Mare sitting outside of the top seven can squeeze in, the Seagulls are just a point behind. They are at home to Tonbridge Angels.

Welling United could join Aveley and Weymouth in leaving us this weekend. If they lose at Hampton and both Enfield and Salisbury win, the Wings will fall.

St Albans City are right in the mix, three points behind the two clubs just above the drop-zone. How will they get on against title-hunting Eastbourne?

What a weekend we’ve got in store!
