National League South: Complete Weekend Preview

By Sam Elliott

The closest promotion race around is coming into the home straight but there are plenty of hurdles to jump as the finishing line comes into sight.

There’s no division quite like the Vanarama National League South this year, and even as April opens up we’re still no closer to knowing who will be sitting top at the end of the month.

Well, with first playing third things could start to become a little clearer.

Possession is nine tenths of the law as they say, and Worthing still have their claws on the leadership.

With five matches to go, the Rebels boast a three point advantage but two defeats in three suggests nerves may be setting in. Truro City are in town tomorrow and will leapfrog them with an away win.

That wouldn’t be enough to go top if Dorking Wanderers go to relegation-haunted St Albans City and win.

Torquay United are the division’s form side - and it’s substance over style for manager Paul Wotton. After three 1-0 wins, they are fourth and within three points of Worthing as Chesham United travel to Plainmoor.

Eastbourne Borough, thanks to their unbeaten home record, are still in the hunt. They host Weymouth, who could join Aveley and become the second club relegation from the division this weekend.

Maidstone United, in sixth but in good form, will need a lot to go their way if they’re to take the title. Three points at play-off chasing Weston-super-Mare would certainly help their cause.

Boreham Wood have work to do to secure a top seven place and they can go some way to achieving their new goal by winning at home to Salisbury.

Suddenly, Hemel Hempstead Town are up to 9th. It’s too late for a promotion push, but that won’t stop the Tudors trying to get one over Enfield Town.

Meanwhile Welling United will keep their survival hopes alive with victory at home to Hornchurch.

Slough Town need to raise spirits by beating Aveley, Chippenham challenge Chelmsford City while Tonbridge take on Farnborough and Hampton & RB host Bath City.
