National League South: Complete Weekend Preview

By Sam Elliott

It wasn’t so long ago that goal difference separated the top five teams in the National League South.

Fast forward a few matches, and many of those teams that pretty much shared the leadership need to start winning again.

That’s because Dorking Wanderers have managed to keep hold of top spot while many of the others have been taking points off each other.

Two of those in touch play on Saturday too, as out-of-form Boreham Wood welcome third place Eastbourne Borough.

Luke Garrard knows if his team are to stay in the title race, they have to get things together after four defeats in five. The Sports have taken nine points from a possible 12, keeping them four points behind.

Dorking are almost certain to still be leading the way tomorrow night and take on a wounded Welling United, who slipped to within two points of the bottom four after defeat at Enfield on Tuesday.

Torquay United’s run of one win in six doesn’t quite tell the whole story, Paul Wotton feels. Hornchurch arrive after back-to-back wins.

If Maidstone United want to win the division, they can’t afford to be the victim of any more surprise results. It’s a trip to Hemel Hempstead next after losses at home to Aveley, and at Slough Town.

Second-place Worthing will know about the Rebels’ ability to raise it against the teams at the top ahead of their trip to Arbour Park.

Unless Weymouth start winning with regularity, their survival quest will become mission possible. Farnborough, their opponents on Saturday, will know the same can be said about their play-off hopes.

The battle at the bottom is intensifying and Enfield Town take their survival bid to Chesham United.

Aveley’s season has life after their Gallagher Stadium heroics. Weston-super-Mare lie in wait this weekend as Salisbury, not clear of trouble yet, welcome Chelmsford City.

St Albans City fans knew the importance of their late victory over Slough Town on Tuesday and another at Bath City could bring them closer to the teams above the relegation zone.

Elsewhere this weekend, Hampton & RB host Chippenham Town and Truro City look to keep hold of their play-off spot at Tonbridge Angels.
