National League South: Complete Weekend Preview

By Sam Elliott

An epic title race, a meeting of promotion chasers and two big games down the bottom - it’s shaping up to be a brilliant National League South Saturday.

As ever, there’s only one place to start. But the run-down of the situation at the top of the table will take up plenty of paragraphs!

The latest state of play is that Dorking Wanderers went back top in midweek, but their advantage is slim - so slim in fact that they could quite easily find themselves down in 5th by 5pm tomorrow!

That’s because it’s so intense up there and Marc White’s men know they will probably have to win at Salisbury to stay at the summit.

Four other clubs sit just one point behind them, with second-place Boreham Wood at home to Weston-super-Mare, Luke Garrard’s team put aside a challenging few weeks by winning at Hemel Hempstead on Monday night.

Also on 55 points are third-place Maidstone United, but they will be fully aware not many sides win at Slough Town.

In fourth are Worthing, who sit top of the form guide with six wins from seven. January’s Manager of the Month Chris Agutter takes his team to Tonbridge Angels wondering if they can reclaim top spot.

If things weren’t exciting enough, the two sides just below them meet. Torquay United may not be wowing anyone right now but they’re very much in touch. Eastbourne Borough visit in fifth, just one point off the pace - and they haven’t lost since November.

Don’t rule Truro City out of the title race yet. They’re seventh and head to Hampton & RB, whose four wins from six has thrust the Beavers into the promotion conversation.

Welling United do have a seven-point cushion but they sit just a place above the bottom four. St Albans City hope to bring them a little closer and boost their survival hopes this weekend.

Two of the other sides sitting inside the relegation-zone play a six pointer as Aveley take on Enfield Town.

Elsewhere this weekend, Hemel Hempstead host Chippenham Town and Chesham United face bottom side Weymouth.

It’s just one defeat in eight for Bath City, who welcome Hornchurch, with Farnborough and Chelmsford City meeting with work to do to be involved in the play-off chase.
