National League Duo Head into FA Cup Third Round

By Oliver Osborn

Stockport County and Chorley have reached the FA Cup Third Round following another intriguing weekend of cup action for National League clubs.

The latter were headline-makers on Saturday with the upset of the round, defeating League One’s Peterborough United.

After falling behind early in the first-half, Jamie Vermiglio’s men responded excellently with two quick-fire goals on the hour mark to knock out another side three divisions above.

Chorley could be in line to attempt an even bigger giant killing in early January, with Premier League and Championship entering the competition for the first time.

In an all-National League affair with Yeovil Town, Stockport County came out on top in extra-time to end a 14-year wait to take their cup campaign into a New Year.

The teams could not be separated in 90 minutes despite the visitors taking a lead in both halves.

Connor Jennings was the Hatters’ hero, however, heading home inside the far post to seal the tie in Stockport’s favour.

The two winning National League sides will join Boreham Wood in tomorrow night’s draw, with Luke Garrard’s side facing Canvey Island on BT Sport in the final tie of the round.

Elsewhere, Oxford City and Dagenham & Redbridge suffered extra-time heartache against Shrewsbury Town and Mansfield Town, respectively.

Both EFL sides scored late on in the additional half hour to spare their blushes ahead of a potential penalty shootout.

Barnet also took EFL opponents MK Dons into a further period of action, but Cameron Jerome’s cute backheel proved to be the difference at The Hive.

It was not the Second Round result those associated with Darlington were hoping for. The Quakers were hit for six by League One Bristol Rovers.

Havant & Waterlooville were on the receiving end of a shock in the final televised Sunday clash. Eighth-tier Marine humbled Paul Doswell’s men.

A lack of game-time in the build up to Solihull Moors’ cup exit proved detrimental, according to boss Jimmy Shan. His side were unable to hold on to an early lead at Morecombe, losing in extra-time by a 4-2 scoreline.

King’s Lynn Town also exited the FA Cup on Saturday, but manager Ian Culverhouse feels his players could hold their heads high after coming out second best to two-time FA Cup winners Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

In the opening tie, Brackley Town’s valiant display on BBC Two was in vain- defeated 1-0 by a Tranmere Rovers side in improving form.
