National League Cup Could Be Just The Tonic For Tommy

By Sam Elliott

It’s the biggest week of the National League Cup yet - but one club will have to tackle it without their manager.

Aldershot Town have announced Tommy Widdrington is currently undergoing tests in hospital after being taken ill.

The Shots say he is stable and is in good spirits and has placed assistant managers Hugo Langton and Richard Dryden in charge until he is back and ready to return to the touchline.

They will hope to give him a boost in his sick bed when they take on Southampton tonight. The Saints have just one point on the board so far with Aldershot looking to make it six from three matches.

Elsewhere in Group A it’s another cup date for Wealdstone who welcome Derby County, while Woking need some confidence and to get into the winning groove again. It’s Fulham tonight.

Manchester United’s talented kids are top of the Group B table - will Rochdale halt their flying start? Altrincham were unable to last time - will there be better luck against Stoke City?

In Group C the big boys are there to be shot at. FC Halifax Town want to unseat Leeds United’s up-and-coming players while Newcastle United sit just behind in second. Boston United want put them off their stride.

We have three matches in a competitive Group D. Braintree Town have a 100% record to defend - West Brom want to make it an uncomfortable night.

Dagenham are on cloud nine and after beating AFC Wimbledon, Nottingham Forest’s academy stars come to East London.

On the other side of the capital, Sutton United play their first National League Cup match. Tottenham Hotspur’s stars of the future are the opposition, and they’ve got four points so far.
