Moors Appoint First Ever Managing Director

Tony Wilson will begin his new role from September 1st, 2018 and take over the management of the football club, the academy and The Moors Tavern.

Wilson, 54, has a wealth of management experience from previous senior roles at Parker Hannifin; Spennymoor-based Thorn Lighting and Black and Decker. He is also Vice-President of the British Compressed Air Society and a Director at the Employability Trust.

As well as boasting a glittering CV, Wilson has been a key supporter of Spennymoor Town for many years and has forged a strong relationship with the club’s Chief Executive, Bradley Groves, as well as many of its operating officials.

It is these relationships Wilson hopes will make the transition into the new structure a smooth one. He said: “Spennymoor is a club full of great people and with great fans. Just look how many volunteered to clear snow from the pitch recently and made the mammoth journey down to Bromley in the FA Trophy.

“Spennymoor has a great history and is gaining a reputation around the leagues of a club going places. I am really looking forward to continuing and enhancing the great work already underway.”

Wilson takes over at an exciting time for the club, with a host of major developments in the pipeline. Phase One of the ground works has drawn to a close this week, with The Brewery Field being brought up to a standard capable of taking part in the National League North play-offs, subject to FA approval. Phase Two is due to begin during pre-season 2019/20 to further increase the capacity and facilities at the stadium, allowing the club to maximise commercial opportunities and operate as professionally as possible.

The club is also looking to welcome new investors and sponsors ahead of next season to radically change its make-up.

Wilson is expected to restructure the Spennymoor board and management team as a priority, which will allow him to manage each aspect of the club with maximum visibility.

Bradley Groves, Chief Executive of Spennymoor Town, said: “Tony’s arrival signals another step on this exciting new journey for Spennymoor.

“Tony has been a key figure for our Academy for some time, sacrificing significant amounts of his own time for the benefit of young people in the area, so I know I can trust him to do a great job for the club and he already has a deep understanding of what’s required to run Spennymoor Town. He’ll be taking much of the day-to-day away from me and focussing all of his time on progressing this club.

“Meanwhile, I’m still speaking to potential investors to join the us at Group Board-level, which is all part of de-risking the club from myself and making it fit for the future. Tony and I will be formalising a new long-term strategy, which I’m keen to get moving as soon as he arrives in September”.
