They knew Torquay United would be a tougher nut to crack that the league table suggests.
Ultimately they needed to play the waiting game as two late Andy Cook goals secured a 3-0 victory.
Tranmere’s great form has them up to ninth in the National League and Mellon always said the improvement would arrive.
He told the club’s official website that he knew his side would have to work for the points.
He said: “We knew we would be in for a difficult game, we’ve seen a lot of Torquay recently and we know they’re a very competitive side.
“They’re really improving under their new manager, so we knew we would be in for a tough game but every credit to the players.
“We had a little change of shape and they adapted to it brilliantly well and we got a very valuable three points.
“To a man, they all worked their socks off.”
