It was play-off agony for the Kent club at Tranmere Rovers, twice leading at Prenton Park but they couldn’t prevent a great fight back from Micky Mellon‘s side.
McMahon was proud of his players despite the defeat in the north west, the top seven achieved in their first season back in the top tier of Non-League football.
With the manager all-but ruling out the play-offs in February, he knows there were few expectations.
But he is hoping for more next season - and thinks they have shown they have the quality as a club to really push on come August.
“We went until the end,” McMahon told BT Sport. “We have had a tough April and maybe that told in extra time.
“But we can be proud of ourselves and what we have achieved this season, don’t doubt that for a moment.
“Tranmere are a fantastic club and a great team and we took them all the way. We took the lead twice and yes, it’s a shame we didn’t hold that but we knew their quality.
“I can’t speak highly enough of this set of players. We have shown what we’re all about and hopefully we can carry that on into next season and see where that takes us.
“We have great character and great quality, if we can add a little more to that over the summer then who knows what we can achieve.”
