McMahon: Now Fleet Go To Tranmere With No Pressure

Daryl McMahon admits he feared it was all over for Ebbsfleet as they twice landed a sucked punch on Aldershot on Wednesday night.

The Fleet now travel to Tranmere this afternoon “with nothing to lose” according to the manager, who paid tribute to his players after their dramatic penalty success in midweek.

Dave Winfield drew them level late into injury time after Nicke Kabamba through he had done enough.

It’s next stop Prenton Park and McMahon says the pressure will be off his players in this weekend’s live BT Sport semi-final.

“The players showed great character and belief to get there, we never stopped thinking we could do it and even when Aldershot scored we weren’t beaten,” he told the National League’s Oli Osborn.

“When you are one penalty kick away from going out of course you expect the worst, but you have got to keep on going and we did. They were fantastic.

“Nathan Ashmore for me is the best goalkeeper in the division. He’s been outstanding and was again here - he pulled off a great penalty save and kept us believing.

“It was a nervy and tense game but we stayed in it and we eventually got our rewards.”

The heat will be off his team on Saturday, McMahon reckons. He says his side can’t wait to board the coach on Friday.

“On Saturday we’ve got to go there and try and enjoy it,” he said. “Micky (Mellon) has a great team there and they have the best home record in the league I believe.

“We’ve got nothing to lose. They’re got such strong support but all we have got to do is play our game and see what happens.”
