"We still feel we need a bit my physicality in the forward lane, we're one short up there I think," he said.
"We haven't got another number 9 as such, and we haven't got too much in the way of back up so that's something maybe to look at."
Ling is suggesting Orient need more options in attack, with Macauley Bonne and David Mooney their first choice attack in the five Vanarama National League games so far.
"There are other players who can play up there but there's no other Macaulay," the club's director of football said.
"I just think we need someone else we can build off of as well. David Mooney as he is getting a bit older is more of a number ten now, so that's somewhere maybe that we can do something possibly."
Although Orient weren't at their best against Sutton and last Tuesday against Bromley, three wins mean it is a solid start for the O's after the heartbreak of relegation.
"Forget 3G, I said after the game that you wouldn't like to lose 6-1 in a car park," said Ling, making reference of course to their heavy defeat at Hayes Lane ten days ago.
"We had a conference call with the new owners after the Bromley game and we sat down and said whatever you do, do not make Brisbane Road an astro pitch!
"There was no overreact from anyone. We know we have built a solid squad. We were building with forward thinking.
"We needed experience over the summer and that is what we signed. This league is won on good character, I am a firm believer in that.
"Ability doesn't win you games away from home at a lesser club in the middle of December, character does."
Orient are back at home this Saturday when they face Eastleigh Before Monday's game at Maidenhead United.
