Mariners Held by Lions

By Steve Whitney

Grimsby Town`s outside chances of beating Cheltenham Town or Forest Green Rovers to the Vanarama National League title all-but ended on....

....Tuesday night as they could only manage a point from a 2-2 draw at Nethermoor against relegation-threatened Guiseley AFC.

Grimsby remain third, but are fourteen and twelve points respectively behind the top two with only two games in hand now, while Guiseley are now six points above the bottom four

Rob Atkinson gave the home side an early 6th minute lead from a corner.

Craig Disley equalised when he headed in Ryan Jennings' cross in the 19th minute.

Nicky Boshell restored the Lion's lead with a rebounded effort 5 minutes after the interval.

However, Padraig Amond levelled for the Mariners with a looping header from Evan Horwood's cross - his 30th goal of an excellent season to date for the Irishman.

Dover Athletic moved into fourth spot after beating a Lincoln City side whose own play-off hopes look slim after a 4-1 loss at Crabble.

The Imps had been unbeaten in six games which had lifted them back towards the top five.
But they were up against it once Stefan Payne curled in an early 3rd minute opener.

However, Lincoln recovered well from that early shock and gave as good as they got for the remainder of the half without managing to find a leveller.

And they were made to pay after 58 minutes when the Whites doubled their advantage - Sam Magri's setting up Ricky Miller to beat Paul Farman.

Payne added his second of the evening just 2 minutes later after good work by Tom Murphy.

Jack Muldoon gave the Imps hope after a goalmouth scramble 2 minutes later.

But Miller made sure of victory with a fourth 18 minutes from time from close range.

Two other top five hopefuls, Braintree Town and Gateshead, shared a goalless draw at the Avanti Stadium.

The Iron just edged it in terms of possession and shots on target, with Simeon Akinola being denied by Gateshead keeper Sam Russell and Michael Cheek coming close late on.

At the other end, Ryan Bowman came closest for the Tynesiders, but the draw was just about right on the night.

Eastleigh moved level on points with fifth-placed Braintree and sixth-placed Tranmere Rovers after a 2-0 win against mid-table Bromley at the Silverlake Stadium.

Yemi Odubade gave the Spitfires the lead after 24 minutes when he charged down Ravens` keeper Alan Julian's attempted clearance and saw the ball bounce straight into the net.

Bromley, who came into the game in decent form themselves, found themselves two-down with 32 minutes gone on the clock when Jai Reason finished off a good move involving Joe Partington and Luke Coulson.

FC Halifax Town returned on their long midweek journey home with a point after a goalless draw against Torquay United.

The Shaymen made the long journey south in their furthest fixture of the season in a bottom table clash.

Coming off the back of a thrilling 4-2 victory in the first leg of the FA Trophy semi-finals against Nantwich Town, the Shaymen were keen to get back to league business.

Two points separated the two sides ahead of the fixture as both teams looked to secure their safety in the league.

It was largely a game of few chances for both sides as they struggled to find the back of the net.

Town came the closest just before the half-time as the Shaymen’s top scorer Jordan Burrows found himself with the ball in front of the net after multiple deflections, but his shot was sent wide of the post.

Torquay upped the pressure in the second half peppering Town’s defence, but they were unable to beat Sam Johnson to his post resulting in a goalless draw.
