Maher Knows How To Fix Southend United’s Problems

Southend United manager Kevin Maher knows what’s not right and thinks he knows how to fix it.

It’s been an underwhelming start to the new campaign at Roots Hall with just three wins from 13 matches.

Their latest defeat came at home to Maidenhead United on Saturday, the part-timers leaving with all three points thanks to two Kevin Lokko headers.

Their fourth loss in six left fans frustrated but Maher knows there’s still plenty of time to make a success of the season.

Southend were taken over by a consortium led by Australian businessman Justin Rees earlier this year and the club’s future is exciting, the manager maintains.

But he says he has problems to fix and is determined to iron out the issues as swiftly as possible.

The manager said: “You have got to get the basics right and we didn’t. Being hard to beat is a given, and we weren’t.

“I know what needs to be done and I know how I’ll do it. I will get it done.

“The lack of fight is a worry for me and it has been just too easy to score against us this season.

“Balls going into our box too easily and they’re not being well defended. It is something that needs to be addressed as quickly.”

It’s a break from National League action this weekend but they’re playing a familiar foe as they head to Eastleigh for the FA Cup fourth qualifying round.
