Luke's Warm On Wood's Chance Of Another Good Year

He may only be 32 but Luke Garrard has seen plenty in that time, including nearly four years in the dug-out.

Fast approaching ten years at Boreham Wood in a number of roles, he has been in charge since 2015.

What Wrexham would give for that kind of stability in their technical area and the youngest manager in the National League continues to earn plaudits.

Ahead of Saturday's live BT Sport match, the Wood of course are looking to go one better than last season where they came so close at Wembley in the National League Promotion Final.

Ultimately it wasn’t their year and a tough summer of departures will mean going that extra stage further won’t be easy.

But Garrard knows not many gave his team a chance last August, either.

“We are all really excited about the season,” he said.

“We have four points so far - a good win against Dagenham on the first day of the season and on Tuesday a 0-0 draw against Havant.

“So it stands us in good stead for the weekend.”

In fact the sides have identical results. A 1-0 opening day win was following by stalemate in midweek.

Garrard knows Wrexham will be a big challenge and under new manager Sam Ricketts they will be despite to impress.

“New manager, new personnel,” he told the club’s website. “I have watched the games against Dover Athletic and AFC Fylde, and a lot of what I watched, I saw last year.

“They are still very well organised, very well drilled and haven’t conceded a goal as of yet.

“I think that he (Ricketts) has got a great job, because I think that they are a big club at this level, and you saw the amount of fans that they had on Tuesday evening.

“They have got a threat in terms of Fondop-Talom and Maguire-Drew, who I think have been great acquisitions for them at this level. They are going to be tough, like any game is in this league.

“They have got personnel in their ranks who could play for any team at this level, so we know that if we aren’t on our on metal, then we are going to have a hard game on our hands.

“But, if we turn up like we trained today and like we will train tomorrow, then I honestly believe that we are in for a game.”
