Looking Back At Top Five FA Cup 3rd Round Ties

By Tom Feaheny

We've taken a trip down memory lane to look at five memorable FA Cup 3rd round ties featuring National League sides.

All these matches saw National League teams defeat Football League opposition, writes Tom Feaheny.

AFC Wimbledon 1 Sutton United 3 (2016/17)

Paul Doswell's side had earned a replay knowing that the potential visit of Leeds United at Gander Green Lane was the reward for winning this one.

The hosts made the perfect start with Tom Elliott scoring with just ten minutes gone, but things would quickly change when Paul Robinson was sent off with 75 minutes to go, it was in the 75th minute when Sutton drew level with Roarie Deacon scoring.

Then late goals from Maxime Biamou and Dan Fitchett ensured that United would go through to the fourth round, an achievement that saw the bar opened at the club when the players got back!

Peterborough United 2 Kidderminster Harriers 3 (2013/14)

Joe Lolley who is now in the Premier League with Huddersfield Town was the hero in this match as his winner ensured the Harriers would face Sunderland in the next round, this performance was his lasting memory for his old side as he would soon head up to Yorkshire.

Goals from Tommy Rowe and Britt Assombalonga, with strikes from Michael Gash and Jack Byrne meant the scores with level with under 15 minutes to go.

This was one of Andy Thorn's first games in charge for Kidderminster and he will have certainly enjoyed this one.

Macclesfield Town 2 Cardiff City 1 (2012/13)

Two late strikes from Matthew Barnes-Homer ensured the Silkmen would progress by beating the then Championship leaders at Mose Rose.

Nat Jarvis had given the Bluebirds the lead in the second-half with the much changed side looking like they would go through.

Barnes-Homer though would equalise with five minutes to go before winning it right at the death, the reward for Steve King's side would be hosting Premier League Wigan Athletic.

Crawley Town 2 Derby County 1 (2010/11)

There was late drama in this match with Sergio Torres scoring right at the end in front of over 4,000 fans on their Monday night game.

Before all this Kris Commons had seen a penalty saved by Michel Kuipers, it would get even better for Town with Craig McAllister putting Crawley ahead from close range, but Miles Addison equalised with a header.

Steve Evans's side would enjoy a trip to Manchester United in the fifth round and would gain promotion to League Two at the end of the season.

Torquay United 1 Blackpool 0 (2008/09)

It was a memorable season for Torqauy United who would gain promotion by the play-off to League Two, and enjoyed a good cup run with Matt Green winning them this tie against Championship opposition.

The match at Plainmoor was another fine result for Paul Buckle's side.

Ex manager Kevin Nicholson who was playing then would save the Gulls from a replay as he blocked Dominic Merella's shot at the end.
