Limbrick Hails 17-Year-Old Goalkeeper's Debut

By David Richardson

Anthony Limbrick heaped praise on academy goalkeeper Sam Mason, who stepped up to first team duties with Woking suffering an injury crisis.

The 17-year-old was thrown into the Vanarama National League deep end today after the Cards number 1 Nathan Baxter picked up an ankle injury in the week.

Limbrick was only able to name three substitutes with seven players unavailable as Maidenhead United came to town.

The visitors went ahead after ten minutes through Adrian Clifton but Charlie Carter equalised before half-time.

Woking caused a major shock in mid-week beating Bury which took a lot out of Limbrick's thread bare squad.

"After the game on Tuesday night, which was obviously a great occasion for the club and for everyone involved to win that game and be on such a high, we can't underestimate how hard physically it was for the squad," he said.

"We picked up an injury before the game which was Nathan Baxter so we put Sam Mason in goal for his first game. He's a second year scholar, greta credit to academy for him going in and being able to handle it.

"I thought he did great, I don't think he could have stopped the first goal if I'm honest. He came out and cleared his lines a few times. To have never played a senior men's game of football before I thought he did very, very well.

"Thinking about that, and having been to Halifax and then Bury, it took it out of us and we'll settle for a point."
