Lewer: 'Southport Matching League's Big Boys'

Alan Lewer knows not too many people had his Southport side down for a stint near the top of the Vanarama National League North, or to be taking points from the promotion favourites.

But he says his players are up there on merit as yesterday their great start to the new season continued.

A 1-1 draw with York City shows the manager his newly assembled team can mix it with the best the division has to offer.

But the big games keep coming thick and fast for the Sandgrounders.

They face Salford City at Moor Lane on Bank Holiday Monday but Lewer thinks his players are taking to the league really well.

"I've got to say it has been an excellent start for us," suggested the former Histon manager.

"It has been enjoyable and the players have done really well.

"York City are one of the strongest teams in the league and we matches them. If they are one of the strongest sides then we aren't that far away, are we?"

Lewer now turns his attention to a trip to Manchester on Monday.

"The big games keep coming!" he said. "But you have got to embrace them.

"I'm so pleased with the players. I don't think many thought we would start as well as we have."
