Legendary Goalkeeper Set To Break World Record

By David Richardson

Goalkeeping legend Paul Bastock is set to break an astonishing world record this week by making his 1,250th competitive career appearance.

The 47-year-old, who has played for a number of Vanarama National League clubs, is expected to equal the record set by England hero and goalkeeper Peter Shilton this evening when he takes on Sleaford Town for Wisbech Town in the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division.

Bastock should make his record breaking 1,250th career appearance in Saturday’s FA Vase tie at Thetford, 31 years after playing his first at Coventry City.

In his long and successful career, Bastock earned the majority of his appearances while at Boston United, currently in the National League North, from 1992 to 2004.

He holds the most appearances for the club with 625, with 501 of them coming in league fixtures, and was voted the club's 'all-time cult hero'.

In 2004, Bastock appeared once for National League side Dagenham and Redbridge before moving on to St Albans City, of the National League South, where he made 274 appearances over three spells.
