Last-Gasp Southport Make It Two Successive Wins

By Steve Whitney

Southport look determined to make their stay in the Vanarama National League North a brief one as they made it two wins from their opening two matches on Monday night.

The Sandgrounders travelled over the Pennines to take on a Bradford Park Avenue side buoyed by Saturday`s excellent opening day win at Tamworth and sealed a late 2-1 success.

But Alan Lewer and Mark Wright`s side had to come back from being a goal down when Adam Boyes netted the opening goal of an entertaining match from close range in the 10th minute.

The visitors took a while to get over conceding their first goal of 2017/18, but managed to equalise on the half-hour mark when defender Andrew White managed to smash home from the edge of the box after Avenue `keeper Steven Drench had pushed out a shot from Liam Martin.

However, the game-changer came on 62 minutes when Avenue defender Javan Vidal was shown a straight red card for a two-footed tackle on White.

But it wasn`t until the final minute of normal time that Port managed to make their extra man tell fully when new boy Yves Zama crossed for former Bangor City skipper Gary Roberts (pictured) to fire past Drench.
