Last-Gasp Redshaw Earns Vital Win For Salford

By Steve Whitney

Salford City returned to the top of the Vanarama National League North table after a dramatic last-gasp 2-1 win against struggling Tamworth at The Peninsula Stadium on Tuesday night.

In front of a crowd of 1,096, The Ammies will count themselves fortunate to have got away with a win, although it says a lot for their character that they kept going after receiving a big slice of luck before sub Jack Redshaw`s late winner.

The first half ended goalless, although the home side bossed possession and had the few chances the half produced.

But the second half produced far more drama and excitement.

And it was the relegation-threatened Lambs who broke the deadlock after 58 minutes, having started the second period much better.

A Darryl Knights free-kick found Aman Verma, who headed in past Max Crocombe.

The Ammies responded by a change of system to three at the back and it paid off with 71 minutes gone on the clock when Redshaw`s angled shot was parried by Tamworth `keeper Jack Stevens but the loose ball was fired home by Anthony Dudley.

Both sides went for the win in a thrilling second half but it was the visitors who looked as though they were going to win a vital three points when they were awarded a penalty 3 minutes from the end of normal time.

A cute ball from Connor Taylor sent Zack Kotwica racing through and he was caught by Carl Piergianni in the box, with the referee immediately pointing to the spot.

Kotwica dusted himself down to take the kick himself but his low effort was well saved by Crocombe, who also reacted quickly to stop Kotwica netting the rebound.

That definitely spurred The Ammies and in the final minute, a spell of pressure ended up with a long throw-in from Michael Nottingham was headed on by Piergianni for Redshaw to beat Stevens and run away in celebration.
