Last-Gasp Keeper Recruit For Wrexham

By Steve Whitney

Wrexham manager Dean Keates had a late search through his contacts book looking for a late signing to cover for his goalkeepers, following a recurrence to Chris Dunn’s thigh injury.

With literally minutes remaining before the National League’s new Friday 5pm registration deadline for weekend games, he was able to get signed paperwork for Callum Preston across to the league offices.

International clearance also came through in double quick time, to make the player eligible for this afternoon’s game.

The 21-year-old was most recently with SkyBet League Two side Stevenage, acting as cover during last season and playing in the Checkatrade Trophy game for the Hertfordshire club.

Although born in Stafford, he lives near Welshpool and has represented Wales at under-19 level, playing against Montenegro in April 2014.

A youth player with The New Saimts, Liverpool and Birmingham City, he turned professional with the Blues and enjoyed loan spells with Worcester City and AFC Telford United.

He left St Andrews in the summer of 2015 and signed for Crawley Town as their number two, playing ten times during the following season.

He has signed non-contract forms for the Dragons in the short-term, after spending time training with Rochdale this summer.

Keates said: "With Chris going down again in training on Friday, we felt we had to move quickly to bring in cover.

"It was a close call, but very happy thar Callum was able to make himself available and we look forward to working with him".
