The Magpies “gave up” according to their boss and were on the end of the second 7-1 result of the day.
It has been a positive first season in the National League for the club but Saturday was no doubt a low point.
Maidenhead, the former Hampton & Richmond and Braintree boss, says he has never suffered a similar result and was left apologising to the Magpies supporters who made the long trip up to the North East.
“At 3-1 I thought we were still in the game and I felt we gave up to be fair,” Devonshire told BBC Radio Berkshire.
“I've never had that before in my life. People stopped running around and doing their jobs, it is a reality check for us.
“I don't think any of the boys can come out with any credit because we defend as a whole team. It was too easy for them.
“I feel for the fans who travelled up, and all I can do is apologise for that. In all my time, I’ve never had a defeat like that.”
