The Red Dragons beat Eastleigh 2-1 in the BT Sport live game and it was good enough to push the Welsh club into fifth place.
Their second half come back was capped by goals from close season recruits Shaun Pearson and Chris Holroyd and Keates said after the game he knew what he was signing in the summer.
“It was all about the result and I’m delighted,” said the Racecourse manager.
“Defensively we have been good this season but we were frustrated with the goal we let in.
“But we showed what we are about in the second half. We said in the dressing room we can still win it and the players showed that belief.”
Keates said on BT: “We looked when we were rebuilding about players’ DNA and I think we have shown we have a good group
“We can take a lot of confidence from this win and keep progressing as a team.
“Shaun Pearson wanted that goal and he is a fantastic captain. We have gambled for the winner, it has got a deflection but we will take that and Chris deserved it.
“I think anyone has a chance this season,” added the manager “It’s there this season if one of the clubs wants to go and grab it.”
