Keates Gets Reaction He Wanted With First Win

By David Richardson

There was a sense of relief on Tuesday evening for Wrexham manager Dean Keates as they secured a first three points of the Vanarama National League season at Maidenhead United.

The new look Reds were beaten 1-0 at home by Macclesfield Town on the opening day which left Keates needing a response ahead of a trip to newly promoted Maidenhead - watch match highlights here.

He got just that as an unlikely brace from centre-back Manny Smith was enough despite Dave Tarpey's equaliser for the home side.

In front of over 350 travelling Wrexham fans, Keates knew just how big this win at York Road was, a notoriously difficult place to get a result from Alan Devonshire's side.

"I'm very pleased. We asked for a reaction from the weekend," Keates told the club's website.

"That's a hard place to come, not many teams will come here and get three points. That's only the fourth time they've lost here in three years. The lads were outstanding.

"It wasn't pretty but it was full of everything that the fans want to see. The passion, desire, heading, everyone put in a big shift."
