Julie, Ruby And Nigel Named November's Top Volunteer Trio!

By Sam Elliott

We love the Vanarama Volunteer Of the Month award, and we’ve decided our unsung heroes are so important that they now deserve a stand-alone article!

Thanks to our generous title sponsors, we have been able to properly recognise the great at the good of the game for the last five years.

Giving deserved kudos to those who give up their time just for the love of their club,
we’re thrilled to be able to bring their stories to life.

Scunthorpe United are quite clear - every club needs a Julie Taylor.

There are a number of reasons why she was nominated and being at the club nearly every single day is a good start!

Whether that’s been painting the steps in the stadium, readying the Junior Iron Fan Zone, cleaning seats or general odd jobs, Julie has been a “total asset” to the day-to-day upkeep of Glanford Park.

Also giving up her time to sit on the Fans’ Panel, a group which meets across the season to discuss issues at the club, she can’t seem to do enough for her team.

The Iron also tell us Julie helps grow the profile of the club in the community, assisting with bringing in new clientele and spreading the word around the area she lives in.

She has most recently been named as the club’s Community Captain to help mark the Premier League's 30th-anniversary celebrations.

They do say you can tell a person’s character when things aren’t going well and Julie is a case in point.

Ruby Thompson hasn’t been sparkling bright at Brackley Town for too long.

But the 16-year-old is clearly a star of the present as well as the future - and our youngest ever winner!

She has volunteered at the Saints with her father over a number of years but now she is able to take on more independent tasks.

She’s become a fully-qualified matchday helper, selling programmes and helping out with the junior football activities.

The passionate teen also takes charge of the mascots, helping the little ones to meet their favourite players after the game.

Nigel Jones, on the other hand, has been a dedicated volunteer at Welling United for many years.

He has spent a lot of his free time helping out around the club’s ground, and even started Radio Wings where he travels at his own expense to bring live commentary to fans who cannot make the away fixtures.

Helping with interviews and on the PA on match days, he also puts together a popular podcast.

The club tell us they really appreciate his efforts and that Nigel deserves some recognition for all the hours he puts in.

Well done to our three brilliantly committed winners!
