Oxford were winless going into the game while the Gulls had earned seven points and were yet to let in a goal.
But the early National League South formbook was turned on its head and Jones paid tribute to his players.
“That was our first win of the season and we really needed in,” he told the league’s Oli Osborn at Marsh Lane.
“To be fair I actually think we have played really OK in our first three matches and that we deserved more points than we had got.
“So the message to the players was just to keep going and keep believing.
“Torquay were on the front foot in the second half and we had to show a real desire to see the game out.”
Gary Owers’ team threw the kitchen sink at them and Oxford needed the rub of the green at certain times.
“I’m just over the moon with the win,” he said. “Even at this early stage in the season if you aren’t winning matches the pressure comes on you.
“We saw both sides of our game in either half and it’s good to know we can do that against good sides.
“They hit the crossbar and came close but with the bad luck we have had in the first few games, I think we deserved Lady Luck being on our side this time.”
