Johnson: We Couldn't Have Asked For A Tougher Start

If there's one fixture to look out for in the Vanarama National League North on Saturday, it's Salford City vs Darlington.

Salford lost in an epic play-off final last season to FC Halifax Town while Darlo finished 5th, albeit couldn't compete in the play-offs due to ground requirements.

Both sides have now completed their pre-season schedules - the Ammies ending on a 2-0 win at Trafford last night.

Joint Salford boss Anthony Johnson can't wait for the new season to begin, but knows just how difficult the opening fixture will be.

"I'm certainly getting excited. Normally there's a bit of trepidation, a bit of nerves knocking about," Johnson told the club's website.

"It's been a great pre-season in terms of performances and results. The way we've played and what we've done in training has been outstanding. That's all good and well providing that Saturday we hit the ground running.

"We couldn't have asked for a tougher start. There's a bit of history between us both over the last few years but I've always felt the rivalry, if you will, has pushed each other. The proof will be in the pudding as to how good a pre-season we've had come five o'clock."
