Jenkins' Fearless Oxford Are Already Coming Of Age

By Sam Elliott

Oxford City manager Ross Jenkins may be the youngest National League manager by some way but he’s long enough in the tooth to know his team are doing something special right now.

Fears were growing early on for the newcomers following three back-to-back defeats which saw the club off to a sluggish start after promotion to Step 1 for the first time.

But since then they are seven unbeaten and appear to have totally forgotten how to lose football matches.

The 32-year-old saw his side come from two goals down to draw at Eastleigh on Tuesday night as they refused to let their fantastic run go.

During that period they’ve thrashed Hartlepool United and Boreham Wood and Jenkins knows what his players are capable of - and that’s better than the first half showing on the south coast.

He wants his side to become a 90 minute team after yet another stirring recovery but couldn’t criticise his squad after responding to Scott Quigley’s double. Latrell Humphrey-Ewers’ goal took a point back to Oxford and it left their fans ecstatic.

“It’s a really good point, we had a few injuries. It may have been 2-2 but I don’t think it was a great game to watch. No side played any type of entertaining football,” Jenkins told the club’s video player.

“The main positive is that we showed great character and in the end we got a fantastic point out of it. We kept going, we didn’t stop.

“Eastleigh are a good team so you can’t argue with a point. We have to laugh sometimes with our first half performances compared to our second, but if you don’t laugh you’ll cry!

“We were a bit off it and that’s something we need to address but the fight and the spirit is there. We don’t roll over and accept defeat, we keep going. It’s pleasing but at the same time we’ve still got that bit of disappointment.”
