The Red Dragons returned to the summit on Tuesday night thanks to their professional 2-0 win at Boreham Wood.
It’s the first time they have been in pole position since December.
It’s three wins from three under their new manager but Hughes says he doesn’t deserve any of the credit.
“I’m delighted, absolutely delighted,” he told Wrexham’s YouTube channel.
“The players have been outstanding, it’s all about them as they are the ones who have to cross the white line.
“I’m just guiding them! They are the ones who are performing well. We’re top of the league and we’re going to enjoy it.”
He said two-goal Ben Tollitt deserves praise after pushing to stay on at the Racecourse Ground.
“We knew Boreham Wood were on a bad run and had only won one in ten, so that meant they were going to come at us and have a go,” he said.
“It wasn’t a fantastic performance by us, but we did what we had to do.
“Ben is a talented player, that’s why we’ve kept him for an extra 28 days. He gives us something that we haven’t really got.
“He shown his commitment to the club by wanting to stay and I’m delighted for him.”
